First of all, on the issue of FGM are two groups :

The first group are those who 'erroneously' believe that it is an Islamic recommended act .

On the other side are those who believe that FGM should be rejected completely. And that is what our article is proposing.

But I think I propose an alternate view . it is the view that FGM is a *cultural practice* that precedes Islam and should be seen as such.

For the people that believe that it is either wajib or mustahab, there is no known authentic hadith to support the idea and there are no known reports that the prophet salaLahu alayhim wasalam did it to any of his daughters and so this removes it from the category of wajib or mustahab

As for those who propose a clear rejection, I want you to check out this hadith in sahih Muslim where the Prophet salaLahu alayhim wasalam said : when a man sits between the four parts and the two circumcised parts meet, then ghusl is obligatory . Which means that the Prophet salaLahu alayhim wasalam was aware of the act but neither disowned it or recommended or practiced it.

Therefore it is a cultural practice and for those who want to do it, they should make sure that it is done to remove only the skin above the clitoris without damaging the clitoris itself as this would cause a decrease in the female satisfaction. And as all scholars of Islam have stated, a man and a woman both have right to full sexual satisfaction.

But to be closer to the way of the Prophet salaLahu is not to do it because of many risks attached.
